Conversations Con La Familia

After moving to San Jose to start Graduate school, I had to figure out how to continue photographing my family.  I started to video chat with family members, without realizing that I might be able to work the video chat software.  I started looking at video chatting software; such has yahoo messenger, AOL and others.  I found Skype to be more useful.    The degradation of the video quality is what gives skype its appeal.  I use skype as a means to capture moments that I am not able to do so since I am not home as much as I want to.  Skype gives me the opportunity to see loved ones and even though I am not able to physically interact with them, I can at least see them. Instead of hearing a reaction, or reading about a reaction, with Skype I am able to actually see the reaction. With this work, I have tried to do the same as in my older work, meaning, capturing random moments, the decisive moment.  Some photographs are taken as far as Germany, Mexico and some as close to Tulare, CA. Using my cellphone, laptop and now my kindle, I am able to maintain the degradation, lines, and pixelation that happens when chatting with someone.  This photographs were represented in one whole row to give it the feel of a filmstrip.
